I'm looking for more info beyond "buy this booster, no buy this one, not that one!" and I think the OP is looking for that as well. The Apollos are already quieter than a lot of preamps at max gain and most of the people using the CL or other boosters didn't have enough gain in the first place vs. If all it does is makes you not have to turn up the gain and slightly reduces the noise, then it doesn't seem like it's worth the expense to me. No offense to anyone here, the gear recommendations are great, but I asked the same question on another forum and all I got was WHICH booster to buy and virtually zero info on WHY it's needed, if it improves the sound or if it just makes you not have to turn up the Apollo gain as high.
No issues with loud vocalists in this setup, but my own voice is pretty quiet, so the SM7b doesn't work with it since I have to max the gain. The Apollo has "enough" gain, but you do have to max it out or close, as you said.
I've been wondering this same thing lately. I keep reading the CloudLifter is designed to help get more gain out of your SM7B when using cheap mic preamps - perhaps this doesn't apply to the Apollo? But having to max it out made me look into a CloudLifter.Īnyone here use a CloudLifter? Is it necessary, or are the Apollo Mic Pre's clean enough and they are ok to max it out at 65db on occasion? I also wonder when used with Unison mic pres will add noise floor at such high levels? Any feedback or experiences would be appreciated. These were just quick scratch recordings so I didn't bother to listen in the room for noise before recording, so this noise could have either been my room or the mic preamp - will need to run more tests.
However yesterday I had to record some quiet vocal parts, which made it so I had to crank the gain to max on the apollo (65) which caused it to pickup a lot of noise. I use an SM7B for vocal recording and though it usually takes cranking the mic pre to 50-55db gain on the apollo interface, it always gives me usable results.
